I enjoy software consulting and helping others design solutions that leverage good design to balance developer, end-user, and business needs.
My best (and worst) characteristic is a desire to develop and contribute my expertise to interesting subjects or domains (see below for examples). I enjoy developing my subject matter expert (SME) roles and my last fascination score suggested I was intrigued by prestige, rather than power. I like having unique talents, expertise, and the occasional technology toy.
Considering my original career and education choices, I’ve wandered along the following path:
(0. I once had a note sent home in grade school asking my parents that I stopped trying to peddle some home-made arts & crafts to fellow classmates. Apparently the other parents got upset when their kids started asking for quarters to spend on my pipe-cleaner creations.)
- Early work experience included… Math Peer Tutor (“Math’s cool, I can do math.”)
- Graduated high school in top 10% active in school paper and theatre productions, thinking… Theatre! (“Math’s cool, but I can be creative!”)
- Attended local university thinking… Civil Engineering (“I can build stuff and be creatively mathematical!”)
- Declared… Math (“Wait. I liked math. Let’s teach it.”)
- Declared… Computer Science (“Do something I like and make money. Let’s be lucratively mathematical and creative.”)
- Taught Martial Arts to children and considered… Martial Arts Studio Owner (“In one of Chuck Norris’s original styles, even.”)
- Competed in Ballroom Dance and considered… Dance teacher
- Landed a Web development internship… Programmer! (“For reals now.”)
- Then technical writer, business analyst, and project manager. (“I’m just getting warmed up.”)
- Completed a bachelor’s in IT and yes, I like programming. (“Doh!”)
- Started a new career as a software consultant.
Each step built on the other and I had support and encouragement along the way. These weren’t trivial steps since each lasted at least a year or two, with some overlap. I’m not including time with community or leadership organizations.
I must really like creative technical pursuits that let me teach and help others. Perhaps my ideal job would be… ready for it?
Co-owner and Web master of a youth and adult education program that focused on dance, martial arts, and math… and offered bronze, silver, and gold certifications combined with a typical martial arts colored belt system.
